Turtle Surveys

Our turtle survey, monitoring and research activities include:

Live trapping, mark-recapture surveys to assess population size and structure

Presence-absence surveys to identify lakes and wetlands occupied by painted turtles

Nesting surveys to pinpoint nesting sites and assess nesting habitat preferences

Hatchling emergence surveys to evaluate nesting success

Radio telemetry to pinpoint hibernation sites and assess movement and activity patterns

Assessing the abundance of invasive species at occupied turtle lakes

Monitoring climate change impacts on occupied lakes and nesting sites

•Undertaking genetic studies of local turtle populations

•Experimenting with best practices for nesting habitat creation
